Everton are into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup. David Moyes' side beat Newcastle United 3-1 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Thursday night, with James Garner, Hayden Hackney and Thierno Barry on target before Dan Burn's late header. The reward is a December trip to League Two club Fleetwood Town – the side that knocked out Arsenal two days earlier.
Two goals in eleven minutes before the break
Newcastle had the better of the opening half-hour, and Jordan Pickford was the busier goalkeeper. Everton turned the game with a sharp spell before half-time. On 34 minutes Garner swept a first-time shot into the bottom corner after Newcastle lost the ball near their own corner flag. Right on the interval Barry slipped the ball into the box and Hackney finished low – his first goal for the club.
Matthias Jaissle reacted with a triple change at half-time, sending on Yoane Wissa, Anthony Elanga and Joelinton. Newcastle pushed higher, but Everton defended deep and in numbers and struck on the break: on 69 minutes Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall ran clear and cut the ball back for Barry, who made it 3-0. Burn's header two minutes from time was no more than a consolation.
The night began with a talking point off the pitch: Everton left Jack Grealish out of the squad for a breach of club discipline, as Sky Sports and ESPN reported before kick-off.

Our take
This was not a pretty game – ToffeeWeb called it competitive but scrappy – yet Everton were ruthless in the moments that mattered. Two goals from midfield before half-time took the pressure off, and Barry's goal was a textbook Moyes counter-attack: absorb, win the ball, go direct. For Newcastle, who won this competition in 2025 and whose coach had promised to go "all in", the exit stings. The first half showed they can control games, but they did not punish Everton when they were on top.
For Everton the draw now looks generous. A win at Highbury would put the club in a League Cup semi-final for the first time since 2016 – but Arsenal's exit is a warning about what a fourth-tier side can do on its own pitch.
