Harry Kane is the 2026 Ballon d'Or winner. The 33-year-old Bayern Munich striker received the 70th edition of the award on Monday night at the London Palladium, ahead of Kylian Mbappé (Real Madrid) and Lamine Yamal (Barcelona).
Why Kane won
The jury of 100 journalists rewarded a season without a real dip: 73 goals for club and country, a leading role in Bayern's Bundesliga and Champions League campaigns, and England's run to the World Cup semi-finals in North America. Mbappé had the bigger tournament headline – he became the World Cup's all-time top scorer with 22 goals – but Kane delivered across the full calendar year, and that is what the Ballon d'Or now measures.
"Being in London, it is extra special," Kane said on stage, and dedicated the trophy to his team-mates and his wife.
A rare English win
Kane is only the fifth Englishman to win the award, after Stanley Matthews (1956), Bobby Charlton (1966), Kevin Keegan (1978, 1979) and Michael Owen (2001). He succeeds Ousmane Dembélé (2025) and Rodri (2024). Yamal also took home the young player award, while Spain's World Cup-winning coach Luis de la Fuente was named coach of the year.
The week that follows matters
There is little time to celebrate. Kane's Bayern go into a run of three games that will shape their autumn:
| Date (CET) | Match | Competition |
|---|---|---|
| Wed 28 Oct, 20:45 | Bayern – Magdeburg | DFB-Pokal, 2nd round |
| Sat 31 Oct, 18:30 | Bayern – Borussia Dortmund | Bundesliga |
| Tue 3 Nov, 21:00 | Atlético Madrid – Bayern | Champions League |
The Klassiker is the real test. After seven matchdays both clubs are unbeaten on 17 points; Bayern sit top only on goal difference (25:6 against Dortmund's 12:4) – see the Bundesliga table. In Europe, Bayern are only 14th of 36 after three games (one win, two draws), so a result in Madrid would lift them back towards the top-eight places that lead directly to the last 16.
Our take
The award confirms what Bayern's numbers already show: Kane is the most reliable finisher in Europe right now. Whether this season becomes historic depends less on Monday night than on the next six days – and on whether Dortmund can stop him on Saturday.
